Extremely flexible pick & place unit with digitized pneumatics – technocrat

The Festo Motion Terminal allows pneumatic positioning.

A VTEM Festo Motion Terminal it puts pneumatics into the era of Industry 4.0 with applications that can replace more than 50 individual components. Just as the smartphone became the market leader in mobile communications a decade ago, so has the Festo Motion Terminal revolutionizing automation technology. This new type of function integration, combined with software, simplifies the entire value chain by requiring only a single piece of hardware.

This means that users can perform different tasks with a single valve, and we implement 16 proportional pressure valve functions in 8 valve bodies. This significantly reduces the amount of work required, from design to workpiece change. That’s why experts call the VTEM Festo Motion Terminal the revolution in automation technology.

Simplify pick & place applications

A VTEM Festo Motion Terminal allows users to implement all the functions of the pick & place application in a single system. Components such as shock absorbers or flow control valves are no longer required. As motion applications take over many tasks and replace complex mechanical structures, the design process becomes much easier. Process data can be read at any time, allowing users to respond quickly to discrepancies, ensuring consistent quality.

Positioning with pneumatics

The “Positioning” application provides flexibility for handling professionals when positioning workpieces of different sizes. They can optimize the movements between the endpoints for all possible workpiece sizes, for example by precisely defining variables such as movement speed and end position impact energy.

With the “Positioning” motion application, the pneumatic actuators can be freely positioned along the entire working stroke, and the movement of the cylinder can be controlled by means of speed, acceleration and jerk parameters. Fine positioning is possible for the selected series, with a stroke of up to 300 mm, by specifying the limit values.

Pressure and vacuum control

“Proportional pressure regulation” application ensures safe vacuum movement. The vacuum level easily adapts to the weight to be moved. This allows factory operators to increase the energy efficiency of their application. Transition times or manual transitions are a thing of the past, as users can easily switch to the required parameters. Virtually vibration-free end position recording with “Soft stop” minimizes wear and shortens cycle times.

Software instead of hardware

Thanks to the rapid activation of new functions via Motion Apps, machine developers can create a basic machine type and then use the Festo Motion Terminal to select the motion application to endow the machine with different functions and services according to the customer’s needs. The ability to copy and transfer parameter sets simplifies planning and saves time. An additional benefit of assigning functions through software is that they prevent unauthorized access and protect know-how, as it is not possible to tell from the outside what functions the valves perform.

Maintenance is also simplified with automatic leak monitoring, and a long list of spare and wear parts is a thing of the past. With the “Leakage diagnostics” application, malfunctions can be detected using diagnostic cycles and defined thresholds and linked to a specific actuator. This allows for predictive maintenance.
