Experts will assess the amendments to the electoral law after the intervention of the Constitutional Court

Prague – Experts on constitutional law and electoral systems will today address possible changes to the rules of elections to the Chamber of Deputies. The reason is the decision of the Constitutional Court, which repealed some key parts of the electoral law last week. The debate was initiated by Senate President Miloš Vystrčil (ODS).

The Constitutional Court annulled part of the provisions on parliamentary elections due to violations of the equality of the right to vote and the chances of candidate groups. Parliament must now approve the election amendment. In particular, the provisions on the method of converting electoral votes into parliamentary seats need to be replaced.

Last week, despite the agreements of the parliamentary factions, the Chamber of Deputies twice refused to start discussing the People’s Electoral Amendment, through which it could quickly seek redress. Because of this, senators want to prepare their own draft. According to the YES movement, the amendment should be submitted by the government. YES and the SPD, unlike other parliamentary parties, prefer the abolition of 14 constituencies, even though they have been retained by the Constitutional Court, and the transformation of the Czech Republic into one constituency as in the European elections.

Constitutional lawyers Marek Antoš, Jan Wintr and Ladislav Vyhnánek or political scientists Tomáš Lebeda and Jakub Šedo are to debate electoral adjustments in the Senate.
