The city of Vienna has recognized the importance of solar energy, and is therefore continuously investing in the construction of photovoltaic plants and the improvement of their power. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the city’s energy supply company Wien Energie set up an average of one new solar power plant a week last year.
The installed capacity of the plant in 2020 was increased by 26 MW, which is a new record on an annual basis. With over 260 solar power plants and a total installed capacity of almost 60 MW, this city energy company is the largest solar energy operator in Austria.
Vienna’s solar plants produce green energy that is enough to supply 25,000 households. At the same time, more than 80% of them are placed on the roofs of buildings. A large plant is also being built on the site of a former gravel dump in the Donaustadt district. This 11.5 MW solar plant will be able to supply about 5,200 households with the obtained energy.
