Ex-BVB leader, a cult kicker from 1. FC Köln and a loan from FC Schalke 04 in the spotlight

Many familiar faces from the Bundesliga now play largely unnoticed by the German media abroad. Today in the spotlight of sport.de: A cult player of 1. FC Köln, a former BVB leader and a loan from FC Schalke 04 with jammed loads.

Second division champion with 1. FC Köln in 2005, the double with FC Bayern in 2008, English cup winner in 2014 with FC Arsenal, Turkish cup champion with Galatasaray in 2016, Japanese with Vissel Kobe and of course world champion with the DFB team in 2014: an excerpt from Lukas Podolski’s trophy cabinet shows that the attacker was able to celebrate almost everywhere. The 35-year-old still has title chances with his current employer.

Poldi has been lacing up his shoes at the Turkish first division club Antalyaspor for over a year. In the SüperLig the club only occupies a place in the midfield, but in the cup the dream of the title is quite alive. The Scorpions recently booked a ticket for the semi-finals of the Turkish Cup with a 1-0 win over Sivasspor led by former German junior international Robin Yalcin.

Fredy scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute, Podolski stepped onto the pitch in the 66th minute and helped to bring the lead over time. In the semi-finals, Alanyaspor is waiting for Podolski and Co. in mid-March.

In total, Podolski played 22 competitive games (3 goals) for Antalyaspor in 2020/21 and even led his club several times as captain on the field. After a capsule injury put the cult kicker of 1. FC Cologne out of action in January, Podolski was ultimately only the joker role. So also on Monday, when Antalyaspor split 1: 1 from Yeni Malatyaspor in the league and cemented his place in the midfield of the Turkish House of Lords.

Ex-BVB leader straight away

While Podolski often had to sit on the bench recently, it is hard to imagine Antalyaspor’s starting line-up without a no less well-known ex-Bundesliga player: Nuri Sahin.

The 32-year-old midfielder moved from Werder Bremen to Podolski’s side before the current season and immediately fulfilled the expectations placed on him. With 27 possible games, Sahin found himself in the starting eleven 25 times. The skills of the former Turkish national player were most likely valued like this at his wedding at BVB.

In Dortmund he rose to a professional in 2005/06 and became an undisputed regular from 2009/10. Sahin played a total of 274 mandatory games for the black and yellow, scored 26 goals, put on 49 more and won the championship title in 2011. During another stay at BVB, the Lüdenscheider-born won the DFB Cup with Borussia in 2017.

Against Malatyaspor, Sahin shone with the submission to the interim 1: 1 and thus played a major role in the fact that Umut Bulut on the other side could not crown a historic record with a victory. The 37-year-old played his 503rd SüperLig game against Sahin and Poldi and thus set Oguz Cetin’s record.

Load jams on loan from FC Schalke 04

Unlike Podolski and Sahin, Bernard Tekpetey is miles away from the dreary midfield of the league at the Bulgarian top club PFC Ludogorets Rasgrad. After 17 match days, the eagles are clearly in first place. Tekpetey has a surprisingly small share in this.

The loan from FC Schalke 04 has not yet scored a goal in 14 league games, not even in the most recent 6-0 win against Etar Veliko Tarnovo. The 23-year-old Ghanaian was in the starting line-up, but while strike partner Claudiu Keserü scored four times, Tekpetey had to clear the field after 56 minutes without a goal of his own.

However, it cannot be ruled out that the right foot will return to Gelsenkirchen in the summer and play a real role. After all, Tekpetey scored ten stalls at SC Paderborn in 2018/19 – and the miners, who are extremely relegated in 2021/22, could use a second division snapshot.
