“Every second, globally, there are 127 new smart devices that connect to the Internet” / “The cost of an incident that impacts an organization is estimated at over 150,000 euros”

Invited in the show “InSecurity”, Dan Cîmpean, interim director of the National Directorate of Cyber Security (DNSC), reveals that a cyber incident that impacts an organization is estimated at over 150,000 euros. At a simple calculation, given that every second, globally, 127 new smart devices connect to the Internet, the losses from cyber attacks are on an upward trend, not to be neglected.

“The estimated cost – and we did not do it from the Directorate, analysts, insurance companies – at the EU level and I think it is about the same in Romania, of an incident that impacts an organization is estimated somewhere at over 150,000 euros “, explains Dan Cîmpean.

Dan Cîmpean: “Those who have produced these devices and sell them do not care enough about testing them in terms of security.”

Attackers and attackers. The offensive line is a moving one. IoT and 5G for secure business. How much should the emergence of these new technologies bother us?

“What I want to tell you – and these are the figures given by analysts – every second, globally, there are 127 new smart devices that connect to the Internet, of all categories. In many cases, those who produced, designed these devices and sell them, do not care enough about testing them from the point of view of security “, confesses Dan Cîmpean.

Dan Cîmpean: “The level of cyber hygiene that the user applies also matters a lot.”

Regarding the equation with many unknowns of cyber security, Dan Cîmpean claims that the user remains the weak link of the security system.

Moreover, Bogdan Nicolae’s guest acknowledges that 40% of incidents happen exclusively due to the way users use all these technologies, which are too little understood by many of them.

“On the other hand – and this is absolutely first-hand information because we see it in the Directorate – for the most part, the problem is not the technology, the problem is the user, the way we use these technologies. For the sake of convenience, we forget that we have to choose our passwords, that we have to change them periodically, we forget that we don’t have to click on messages from phone numbers in very dubious geographies.

The level of cyber hygiene that the user applies, the level of awareness of such risks also matters a lot. And as I said, probably around 40% of incidents are due almost exclusively to the sometimes naive, irresponsible way in which users use all these technologies, which are too little understood. ”

Dan Cîmpean: “We must be prepared to submit projects, to submit proposals for initiatives, to collaborate.”

What does Romania have to offer for the operationalization of the EU Cyber Center in Bucharest? With what contribution do Romanians come to this Center of Excellence?

“I think that, first of all, we must be determined to access the funds that this Center will spend, will carry out in the field of research, innovation, professional training in cyber security. Let’s not forget, this center will run programs of an unprecedented size at European level on cyber.

Never before have sums so large, so coherent, so actively promoted to be invested in the market, as they are at this time. First of all, we must be prepared to submit projects, to submit proposals for initiatives, to collaborate “, concludes Dan Cîmpean, interim director of the National Directorate of Cyber Security.
