European leaders call for Russia to be investigated for war crimes

As Russia’s attacks on Ukraine continue, European leaders have called for Russia’s attacks to be investigated as war crimes. British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss accused the Russian army of committing “terrible acts” in the Ukrainian cities of Bucha and Irpin and demanded that the attacks be investigated as war crimes. “Russia’s illegal and unjust attacks against civilians in Ukraine should be investigated as war crimes,” said Minister Truss.

Truss further stated that the UK would fully support any investigation conducted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is the primary institution with the power to investigate and prosecute war crimes.

“Perpetrators of war crimes will be held to account”

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said in a statement on her social media account, “An independent investigation is urgently needed. The perpetrators of war crimes will be held accountable.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on the other hand, described the footage in the Ukrainian city of Bucha as “horrible and terrifying” and said the perpetrators should be held accountable. Prime Minister Scholz said, “We must investigate the crimes committed by the Russian army. I demand that international organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross be granted access to these areas so that they can independently document the atrocities. The perpetrators of the attacks and those who commissioned them should be prosecuted.”

“PRESSIONS ON RUSSIA MUST BE INCREASED”

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned that if the attacks in the city of Buça turn into war crimes, those responsible will be tried and convicted. In his statement, Minister Le Drian said, “Economic and international pressure should be increased on Russia in order to end the attacks that the Russian army has started against Ukraine and whose influence is increasing day by day.”
