The Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development signed an agreement on the establishment of a joint body for cooperation in developing programs of systemic and participatory education in the field of environmental protection for sustainable development, according to the website of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
The establishment of a joint body, which will work on systematic environmental education of children and youth in order to raise awareness about environmental protection, climate change and sustainable development, was announced by line ministers Irena Vujovic and Branko Ruzic at a meeting in early April.
The task of this body is to deal with the development of systemic and participatory education programs in the field of environmental protection and its integration into the formal education system of Serbia, which is such that continuous cooperation of both departments in the Government is necessary, having in mind their competence.
The focus will be on promoting the importance of preserving the environment, as well as developing awareness and further improving knowledge among children and young people in this field.
The joint body, which consists of representatives of both ministries, will be chaired by Jelena Tanaskovic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
Biology professor Aleksandra Lukić was earlier for RTS stated that children are quite burdened with the material, especially from the fifth grade. A specific subject dedicated to ecology could be introduced, but as an additional activity that is not evaluated.
“Ecology is represented in biology classes – we are talking about protected and endangered species, habitats, children accept all that, often quite emotionally. Students should perhaps gain some more specific additional knowledge about nature protection through the engagement of a more professional person, such as the ecologist himself, “Lukić points out.
