POLICY – Éric Zemmour’s first campaign meeting scheduled for Sunday will finally take place at Villepinte Exhibition Center (Seine-Saint-Denis), north of Paris, instead of the Zénith, his team estimating that the number of registrants has reached 19,000 to date.

“What good news! So many of you want to attend the meeting on Sunday, December 5 that we are moving it from the Zénith in Paris to the Parc des Expositions in Villepinte, ”the now presidential candidate tweeted on Wednesday, December 1.

His entourage explained that in view of the number of registrations at the Zénith, where the candidate had rented a room with 5,800 seats, he had made the decision to move the meeting to the Exhibition Center. The doors will open at 1 p.m., and the public meeting will start at 3 p.m.

Eric Zemmour’s teams “today visited Hall 6 of the exhibition center of approximately 45,000 m2 and which can accommodate some 20,000 people,” the communication service responsible for the site told AFP.

The polemicist had previously indicated on BFMTV that a change of room was in “negotiation”.

Mobilizations against the candidate were planned

The CGT, Solidaires and anti-fascist activists had promised to demonstrate in the direction of the Zenith to “silence Zemmour”. The Municipal Council of the 19th arrondissement of Paris, where the Zenith is located, had expressed concern to the prefect of a “risk of disturbing public order”. For the mayor of the arrondissement François Dagnaud, Éric Zemmour’s speeches mixing “revisionism, incitement to hatred, racism, sexism, homophobia (and) anti-Semitism” were “not welcome in the 19th”.

Extreme left associations (Paris-Banlieue anti-fascist action) had also called for blocking access to the Zenith meeting from noon, with the slogan “Let’s block the Zemmour Zénith!”.

On Twitter, some people, such as the President of the national observatory of the extreme right Thomas Portes or the journalist Taha Bouhafs, evoke the fact that it is precisely because of the risks of demonstrations that the candidate Zemmour has moved his meeting from Zenith towards the Villepinte Exhibition Center, and not because of the lack of space in the room.

About 3000 demonstrators, according to the Paris police headquarters, took part on Saturday in the capital in a parade “against the far right and racism” and “against the ideology” of Eric Zemmour. Very supervised by the police, the parade was punctuated by sporadic incidents after his departure.
