The energy ministers of the European Union meet, this Monday, in an extraordinary council in Brussels.
On the ministers’ agenda is the energy situation in the context of the war in Ukraine, following the recent decisions taken by the Russian company Gazprom to suspend gas supplies to some European countries.
The extraordinary session was convened on Wednesday and will be chaired by Barbara Pompili, Minister of Ecological Transition of France, the country that holds the presidency of the European Union (EU).
The decision came after Russia announced the suspension of deliveries of natural gas to Poland and Bulgaria.
“After the cessation of Russian gas deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria, Europeans remain united and in solidarity,” Barbara Pompili said on Twitter.
The two EU member states did not make payments in rubles, despite the Russian head of state, Vladimir Putin, having declared that the country would only accept to be remunerated for gas deliveries in its national currency.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen denounced the decision as “a new attempt by Russia” to “blackmail” Europeans with gas and assured that the EU is “prepared for this scenario”.
At this Monday’s meeting, Portugal will be represented by the Minister of the Environment and Climate Action, Duarte Cordeiro.
