Climate change is a challenge for society as a whole – including broadcasting. The Bavarian State Center for New Media (BLM) and the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR) compared the energy consumption of radio programs via FM and DAB + with other market partners. There is great potential for savings in terms of transmission and reception.

The studies show: With DAB +, the energy consumption when broadcasting a single program is significantly lower than with VHF. The Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation would save around 75 percent of energy per program if its programs were broadcast exclusively via DAB +. Antenne Bayern even received around 85 percent for their program. Other providers in Germany come up with a similar savings potential.

A continuous exchange of around 122 million VHF radios across Germany, which is motivated by the new DAB + program variety and is already under way today, also means that considerable energy savings are possible on the receiving side. Because although most of them Radios are equipped with additional functions such as displays or WLAN, their power consumption has decreased by around 40 percent in recent years.
