Emergency situations in Latvia for three months are introduced from Monday

An emergency situation in Latvia for three months will be introduced from Monday, October 11, when new restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 come into force, the Cabinet of Ministers made such a decision on Friday.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Director of the State Chancellery Janis Tsitkovskis admitted that the emergency regime could be introduced as early as Saturday, October 9. However, the government postponed the entry into force of the regulation, giving the public more time to become familiar with the new rules.

The Crisis Management Council previously decided to declare an emergency in the country for three months, as well as introduce a number of restrictions, mainly for those unvaccinated from Covid-19.

Wherever possible, in both the public and private sectors, work should be done remotely.

During an emergency, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., the time for the provision of services by public catering enterprises, entertainment and culture, as well as religious organizations has been reduced. Previously, these places could start work no earlier than 6 am and end no later than 24 hours of the day. Catering services can be provided only in an epidemiologically safe environment, no more than four people can be at one table, and the distance between the tables should be at least 3 meters, if no fence is installed between them.

During the emergency, services related to entertainment and attractions will be prohibited, the Cabinet of Ministers decided today. Such a ban will apply, in particular, to water parks, entertainment centers and trampoline parks.

After the announcement of the emergency, schoolchildren will continue to study full-time, but the volume of hobby education classes will be significantly reduced. Teachers and students in all grades in all rooms will be required to wear masks.

According to the Minister of Education Anita Muizniece, wearing masks will not be possible in preschool educational institutions, because it is impossible to ensure the wearing of a mask, for example, by two-year-olds. Therefore, the ministers agreed that masks will be worn in educational institutions by children from the age of six. Students will be tested at least once a week.

During the emergency, people who are not vaccinated against Covid-19 and have not had the coronavirus will only be able to shop at essential stores and will not be able to visit supermarkets.

Tsitskovskis said at a government meeting on Friday that people without a Covid-19 certificate will be able to visit essential stores such as grocery stores, pharmacies, optical stores, pet food stores, press shops, hygiene stores, telecommunications stores and gas stations. … In these stores, 25 square meters of space must be provided per visitor.

When working in a “green”, safe mode, 15 square meters of space should be provided for one visitor.

Also, the head of the State Chancellery said that only grocery stores, pharmacies, optics stores, pet food stores, press, hygiene and telecommunication stores, shoe repair shops and dry cleaners will be able to work in shopping centers on weekends and holidays.

Wherever possible, in the public and private sector, the government encourages working remotely.

It is envisaged that people with the Covid-19 certificate will be able to continue to provide and receive services in person, observing the requirements of epidemiological safety.
