Embassies in Portugal on alert for letter booby traps – Portugal

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructed all embassies to take extra care when receiving mail, after several booby-trapped letters were sent to entities in Spain.

The Portuguese authorities have already strengthened security at the Ukrainian embassy in Lisbon, after the country’s embassy in Madrid received an envelope rigged with explosives last Wednesday.

It was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, who in Lodz, Poland, revealed the alert given to diplomatic representations: “We are giving directions to our embassies to pay extra attention to packages or mail they receive.”

The minister’s alert comes as a preventive action, at a time when the European authorities are attentive to the events in Spain. According to the Internal Security System (SSI), led by Paulo Vizeu Pinheiro, the Anti-Terrorism Coordination Unit (UCAT) “is closely monitoring the situation” in “close articulation with its Spanish, European and international partners”.
