The Cuban government opened shelters and took measures to protect sugar cane and cocoa crops before the storm, the AP reported.

Most of the evacuees went to their relatives, and the rest to local shelters.

About 400 inhabitants of the mountainous areas took refuge in natural caves prepared for emergency situations.

On Sunday, at the end of the day, the center of the storm approached only 20 kilometers from Cape Cruz, in the extreme south of Cuba, and is moving to the northwest at a speed of 22 km per hour.

Stormy winds reached speeds of 95 km per hour.

The next “target” of the storm will be Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 15 counties.

The storm is expected to gradually weaken on Monday as it moves towards Cuba.
