Electric car? Thanks to these charging station apps you will never be without power

Nowadays you not only charge your smartphone, but also your electric car. Most people do this via a (public) charging point. But, where do you find it? These are five excellent charging station apps to ‘refuel’.

Read on after the ad.

What is the best charging station app? A top 5

As the owner of an electric car, you can hardly do without a decent charging station app. After all, you always want to know where the nearest power pump is located. Which app you use for this is very personal. That is why we have listed a few nice charging stations apps for you (in no particular order).

1. Shell Recharge

Electric drivers are probably familiar with NewMotion. This app has been acquired by Shell and is now called Recharge. The built-in filter function is especially useful. For example, you can only filter out the available (fast) chargers, or only see chargers that you can operate with the app.

Also nice: Shell Recharge is active throughout Europe. There are more than 250,000 charging stations in the application. Naturally, Recharge shows in advance how much you pay for the electricity. Compared to NewMotion, it is a pity that you can no longer indicate which electric car you have. This app then only filtered out charging stations available for your car.

2. Chargemap

The Waze of the charging stations apps: that is Chargemap in a nutshell. This app (like the rest) of course offers an overview of charging points, but still manages to distinguish itself. How? By the users of Chargemap. For example, they keep each other informed about new charging stations, recently closed points and other practical information.

This is handy, because that way you can find out, for example, whether a charging point is publicly accessible or not. An additional advantage is that Chargemap is active internationally. When you travel abroad, you enter the route in the app, after which Chargemap will look for charging points for the road. Of course, the application is extra useful for people with a Chargemap charging card.

3. Fastned

The originally Dutch company Fastned is growing rapidly. You will find the company’s fast charging points mainly along highways. ‘Refueling’ electricity at Fastned is therefore particularly interesting for people who are on the road a lot and need to top up quickly. When you start the app, you indicate what kind of electric car you drive, after which everything is customized.

The Fastned app is mainly about convenience. For example, you can schedule a charging session at a station. This means your electric car is charged immediately the moment you plug it in. Speaking of which: via the app you can monitor the battery percentage and the charging speed of your pump, among other things. It is also possible to navigate directly to a charging point. Google Maps or Waze is used for this.

4. Sygic

Who says you have to download a separate charging station app? Sygic, originally ‘just’ a navigation app, also knows where you can charge your electric car. To do this, you must first turn on the EV Mode via the settings menu. Once you have done this, you need to make the map of the Netherlands (or another country) available offline.

check? From now on you can search for available charging stations via Sygic. Of course you can also add a stopover while navigating to quickly recharge your car on the way. Sygic is free to use, but there is also a premium version. Pulling the wallet will show you voice-guided navigation and live speed limits, among other things.

5. Smoov

A big advantage of Smoov is that you can start charging sessions via the app. In other words, you don’t necessarily need a charging card to power your electric car. Outside of this, Smoov also scores a lot of plus points. For example, the app looks clear and fresh.

It is handy that when you look up charging points à la Google StreetView, you see a picture of the station. That way you can be sure that you recognize the place. You can also filter for fast charging stations via the Smoov charging station app and keep track of the charging session via the app. As soon as your car is full, you can also simply end the session via the Smoov app.

The best charging station app does not exist

As this overview shows: there is no such thing as the best charging station app. All apps have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. If the above options do not help you, you can also check whether the maker of your electric car has a solid app.

Most likely this is the case. Audi, BMW, Opel and of course Tesla, among others, make their own apps to make electric driving more pleasant.
