General Motors presents its strategy for the next few years. It does so by showing a series of concepts – as innovative in style and design, as in technology – at CES in Las Vegas. All of course with zero emissions.
They range from the Cadillac Lyriq 100% electric crossover, with the exclusive 33 ”infotainment system screen, to the Celestiq luxury sedan with all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering.
The flagship of the American house also brings with it numerous cutting-edge technological solutions such as the panoramic glass roof divided into 4 sections that can be individually darkened. The concepts shown also include a drone with 4 rotors and a panoramic view that aims to revolutionize the urban transport sector.
30 cutting edge models and batteries
For the energy transition underway and to better prepare for the new mobility of the future, GM has allocated a whopping 27 billion dollars for the next 5 years. In this period of time, the American giant will present 30 new electrified models that will be based on the digital EV platform presented in 2020 capable of implementing the use of 100% electric powertrains and new functions in terms of safety, connectivity and autonomous driving.
Going into more detail, the modularity of the platform will give the possibility to equip the new GM models with front, rear or integral traction based on the position of the engines on the different axles. In the center of the chassis, however, there will be space to place 8, 10, 12 or 24 modules of the battery pack depending on the type of car.
Speaking of batteries, the Ultrium produced in the Ohio plant born from the collaboration with LG Chem will be used. These exploit a new chemical composition which, by decreasing the presence of Cobalt by 70% and adding aluminum, allows a 60% increase in energy density with a consequent increase in the available range to 800 km.
Autonomous driving and OTA updates
Thanks to the use of the new digital platform, GM cars will be able to count on cutting-edge technology that allows processing up to 4.5 terabytes of data per hour in addition to the new Ultify CX service that allows OTA updates and an ID provided by the manufacturer for the functions of the application dedicated to the car.
Among the most important functions that will be on board the cars of the future, the Super Cruise stands out, GM’s autonomous driving which promises to be at least as advanced as Tesla’s Autopilot and Ford’s Co Pilot. This technology will be equipped on 23 models by 2023.
