Electoral Commission: Uganda’s Museveni regains presidential post

According to the Ugandan Electoral Commission, the 76-year-old Museveni received about 58.64 percent of the votes cast.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni wins the presidential election with 59 percent of the vote. It informs the election commission on Saturday.

This extends Museveni’s 35-year reign. His main rival, Bobi Wine, says election fraud has been committed. Wine advises all voters not to accept the election result.

According to the election commission, the 76-year-old Museveni has received around 5.85 million votes. That equates to 58.64 percent of all votes cast.

Bobi Wine has received 3.48 million votes, according to the commission, the election commission said in a statement.

Wine, who was a singer but has trained as a lawyer, says his home in the capital Kampala is surrounded by hundreds of soldiers. He claims he is not allowed to leave home.
