Effective soil pest control – Better Earth

Preparations are underway for the spring sowing of field crops. Seeds are being procured, the sowing structure has been determined and only favorable weather conditions are awaited to start with pre-sowing soil preparation and sowing.

Immediately after sowing, the greatest danger to seeds is posed by soil pests, especially cable larvae (Elateridae). During the winter, the cable cars retreat deeper into the ground and overwinter there, and with the increase of temperature, they migrate towards the surface. The greatest damage is caused by larvae larger than 1 cm by damaging the seeds and young shoots of newly sprouted plants, biting the germ and thus destroying the entire plant.

If soil pest control is not done, the cable cars will cause thinning of the assembly and reduction of yield. In extreme situations, the structure is so thin that the plot must be sown again.

The threshold of harmfulness varies depending on the sensitivity of the cultivated plants. For sugar beet the harmfulness threshold is more than 1 cable car larvae / m², for sunflower more than 2 cable car larvae / m² and for maize over 3 cable car larvae / m². The number is determined in different ways.

Control of soil pests with the help of Present

Until recently, this problem was effectively solved by protecting the seeds with insecticides from the group of neonicotinoids. However, these insecticides are no longer in use, and the cable car problem is still there. For this purpose, Agrosava has registered a new insecticide intended for the control of soil pests, preparation Present.

Present is a soil insecticide in the form of granules with contact and digestive action. The active substance is zeta-cypermethrin from the group of pyrethroids, it acts on the nervous system, a modulator of sodium channels.

It is applied in the amount of 12.5 – 15 kg / ha by spreading granules over the entire surface or in rows, immediately before sowing or together with sowing, spreading devices or granule depositories.

Soil insecticides are also indispensable in greenhouse production. Due to the importance of each plant, the small number of lifts per m² leads to great damage by thinning the seedlings. By treating the Present preparation immediately before transplanting, we effectively solve the problem of soil pests in production in a protected area.
