The Department of Education of the Generalitat of Catalonia will allocate a total of 12,120,605 euros to improve the energy efficiency and thermal comfort of 48 educational centers in the Baix Llobregat. At the Institut Joan Oró de Martorell he will invest 307,610 euros to improve the envelope and the heating system, and at the Institut Pompeu Fabra 151,089 euros for the heating. The following works will be financed with European funds REACT-EU of economic recovery.

The works that will be carried out with this investment include a series of actions with the aim of making school buildings more sustainable, more comfortable and healthier for teachers and students.

Thus, the envelopes will be changed, that is to say, the elements of the facade that act as insulators from both the cold and the heat and that separate the interior from the exterior of the building – this would include the facade, the windows, doors or the roof of the building, among others.

At the same time, the works will make it possible to replace current heating systems with more energy efficient ones, with less environmental impact and that improve the comfort of the centres.

The ultimate goal of all these improvements is to ensure that the buildings owned by the Department of Education become infrastructures with maximum energy efficiency.

The 12 million euros of investment in the Territorial Services of Baix Llobregat with European funds will make it possible to carry out heating replacement actions in 12 educational centers, in 29 the envelopes will be improved and in 7 works will be carried out in heating as in envelopes. 102 million euros will be allocated throughout Catalonia for works in a total of 294 educational centers.

The Department already carries out these improvements annually, but the investment financed with European Funds will make it possible to do in one year what through the ordinary investments of the Department has been carried out in the previous seven years for this concept.

Actions in centers are part of the Educational Infrastructure Master Plan and the Thermal Comfort Plan launched by the Department of Education and which includes different lines of work:

The first, the construction of centers in order to respond to the needs of compulsory schooling. These new constructions are carried out based on criteria of energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The new centers have a design designed with environmental, energy and comfort criteria for students and teachers. And that also includes the technology and materials designed for this purpose.

The second line of action includes the rehabilitation and reforms of the infrastructures in order to make the centers more sustainable and deal with the climate emergency. Renovation, with European funds, for actions to improve those elements that affect thermal comfort and energy efficiency – such as heating and thermal insulation. At the same time, this criterion is included in the actions that the Department carries out annually through the RAM works (Reform, extension and improvement).
