eBay sells part of its interest in the new owner of Marktplaats.nl, the Norwegian Adevinta, to investor Permira.
eBay transfers its 44 percent stake back to 34 percent and collects around $2.25 billion for it.
Furthermore, Permira has the option to buy another one percent. This brings eBay’s interest to 33 percent and thus meets the requirement of the Austrian competition authority. The Austrians want eBay to reduce its stake in Adevinta to 33 percent because it would otherwise have too much market power.
At the end of June, eBay completed the sale of its Classfieds branch, which includes Marktplaats.nl. In addition to the Dutch advertising site, this also includes 2dehands.be, leboncoin from France, mobile.de and eBay Kleinanzeigen from Germany, Kijiji in Canada, fotocasa and InfoJobs in Spain and half of OLX Brasil.
Adevinta is a spin-off of the Norwegian publishing house Schibsted, of which the Dutch Eugenie van Wychen has been a supervisory director since 2012. She is also general manager of FD Mediagroep.
