E-commerce accumulates record for record

E-commerce broke all records so far in the end-of-2020 holiday season, mainly due to the “stay at home” economy.

A new study published by the MIT Real Estate Innovation Lab, entitled Logistics Real Estate and E-Commerce Reduce the Carbon Footprint of Commerce, demonstrates the tangible environmental benefits of online commerce.

In addition to the immediate positive effects of e-commerce on emissions, home delivery is expected to increase by 80% over the next ten years, with continuous innovation such as more efficient design, advances in packaging technology, smart buildings, the shift to electric vehicles and and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) can lead to a strengthening of the sustainability of e-commerce activities.

Dirk Sosef, Director of Research and Strategy at Prologis, said: “The annual growth rate of e-commerce in Europe is similar to that in the US. In Europe, the impact of traditional trade on emissions is slightly smaller than in the US due to the higher density of traditional shops and the better public transport system. Nevertheless, there will also be strong positive effects of e-commerce innovation on harmful environmental emissions in Europe. ”

Prior to the end-of-year holiday period, the annual growth rate of e-commerce sales in Europe between November 2019 and the same period in 2020 averaged 34 percent, with differences in values between countries. Accordingly, in Hungary this value is 40 percent. (source: Eurostat)
