Co-founder Jimmy Hermans says in a press release: “Competitions are only organized for professional urban artists and athletes, but not for the vast majority: amateurs. We solve those two problems with CityLegends.”
He started the app together with technical director Thijmen Verkerk.
On CityLegends, street athletes compete against each other by posting their creativity, such as a filmed skate trick, on the app, which can be seen in a timeline like Instagram’s. The other users then vote whose work made the most impression. The winner thus conquers a spot, a battle or a tournament and wins money or prizes from brands that sponsor the community.
An urban sport like skating is also back on the agenda at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. That started in 2020 in Japan when 3X3 basketball, BMX freestyle and skating were added to the program.
The company wants to use the money to scale up its reach to other cities, at home and abroad, and to expand its proposition towards advertisers and sponsors.
