During the pandemic, stress increased in women, altruism in men – Man – Science and technology

During the pandemic of a new type of coronavirus, stress increased in women and altruistic behavior in men. This follows from an international study involving the National Institute of Mental Health (EMERGENCY). In general, time spent with the media has increased.

The study involved more than 200 researchers and 115,000 people from 150 countries. The aim of the ongoing study is to obtain information for prevention and social programs targeting the covid-19 pandemic and other future pandemics.

The study is also underway in the neighboring Czech Republic, where more than 2,300 respondents took part, mostly women. “An interesting finding is the fact that in many respects women do worse during a pandemic: while almost three in ten women reported a more pronounced worsening of stress, the difference was insignificant for men. At the same time, women experienced a more significant deterioration in feelings of loneliness and anger than men, “said the study coordinator from NÚDZI Denisa Maňková. According to her, an increased level of altruistic behavior was noted in one-fifth of the participating men, while there was no apparent difference in women.

In an intergenerational comparison, the study showed that the feeling of loneliness worsened more in young adults than in other groups. More time spent with the media was reported by 60 percent of respondents.

According to the results so far, people stated that exercise, devotion to hobbies, work and contact with other people help them the most to cope with unpleasant feelings during a pandemic. “For seniors, the most effective was direct personal contact or interaction with others, exercise or walking, a meaningful hobby and, surprisingly, also work from home or from the workplace,” added Maňková.
