Dream homes and where to find them in the new Living In architecture book

Built on the hill overlooking the sea in Sant Feliu de Codines, a small municipality in Catalonia, the villa that the architect José Antonio Coderch he designed for himself in 1972 appears as perched in a defensive position. With his seemingly impenetrable red brick facades and its irregular profile, from the outside does not let you imagine the airy rooms, the patios and the private swimming pool it protects. Today the family home is occupied by the designer’s grandson and is partly rented through Airbnb.

That of Coderch is only one of the thirty houses collected in the book Living In Modern Masterpieces of Residential Architecture published by the German Shape in collaboration with the biennial magazine Openhouse. Six years of research – based on criteria such as the exclusivity of the place, the ability to excite, the link with the community and local culture, the harmony of the whole – and a refined curation led to the final selection, enhanced by the photographs large size showing all the details.

Among the wonders to discover the Chilean Poli House by Pezo von Ellrichshausen, a brutalist concrete cube overlooking the ocean, used as an artist’s residence. Winks at the shapes of pre-Colombian ruins there home studio of the sculptors Reyes Fernandez in Mexico City, made unique by a two-level library overlooking the living area. It impresses with its scenographic solutions Sheats Goldenstein residence in Beverly Hills – Los Angeles which, not surprisingly, has hosted several film productions.

They carry the flag of our country high Villa Cardo of Andrew Trotter, a buen retiro immersed in the Apulian countryside among olive groves and prickly pears; its candid volumes in white lime and thick stone walls are a tribute to the vernacular architecture of the place. More urban and “bourgeois” the apartment obtained from Antonio Lodovico Scolari and Christian Pizzinini inside the Renaissance Palace of the elephant of the Galatina tower, furnished with unique design pieces and contemporary works of art.

There are architectural masterpieces and there are those who live there. But we can all dream, page after page.
