Don’t spare me! – Iveco T-Way test drive – Car engine

The T-WAY was built for a team, you don’t have to handle it with gloved hands, it was designed for the most difficult conditions in the quarries. Photo: Iveco and Kristóf Karlovitz

Created in 1975 from a merger of several European truck factories, Iveco’s product range ranges from driver-driven vans to the heaviest class. Your vehicles have always been known for their excellent value for money due to their focus on substance-focused design. Recently, it is renewing its high-end trucks: the S-WAY long-haul, international truck (also the first in the market to run on natural gas), the X-WAY mainly for road but occasional off-road transport, while the newly introduced T-WAY, according to the brand, champion of endurance. This is somewhat contradicted by the fact that the Iveco Astra brand builds special vehicles for truly brutal off-road tasks. So we can say that as a successor to the deservedly famous Trakker, T-WAY models have been developed for “average, but just quite skinny tasks, construction, and surface quarrying,“ Don’t spare! ” with a slogan.

The cab is suitable for the use of modern, all kinds of online aids, but at the same time it is comfortable and friendly. Smartphone mirroring also helps the driver

Versatile design
The WAY variants have a distinctive, modern, streamlined, eye-catching cab design and, depending on the application, are available in two heights. What’s not so striking is the T-WAY’s market-leading strength and easy-to-build chassis made of 7.7 or 10 mm thick thanks to its clever structural layout. It is available in 2, 3 or 4 axles, with all kinds of drive formulas, as a semi-trailer and as a flatbed or special truck. The all-wheel drive range has been expanded with models with wheelbases of 4,000, 4,200 and 4,500 millimeters, capable of transporting special shipments without modifying the chassis. The engine was very striking when it came out, and even today it is an exceptional Cursor with a choice of 9 and 13, with two and three power levels, between 340 and 510 horsepower, and between 1400 and 2300 Nm. The transmission can be a 16-speed manual ZF Ecosplit (which I drove on the test day) and a 12-speed or 16-speed ZF Hi-Tronix. Standard equipment is the wheel hub transmission on the rear axles. The new heavy-duty suspension for dual rear axles optimizes the vehicle’s weight distribution and improves performance on off-road roads, coupled with higher ground clearance and better off-road angles. As far as the braking system is concerned, disc brakes have also appeared on the rear axles, but all-wheel drive models still have drum brakes; it is better protected if it has to be penetrated by deep mud.

Consumption is reduced by the Eco-Roll program, taking advantage of the inertia of the vehicle, for example when driving on slopes. With its new algorithms, the control finds the right shift strategy for every application

He grew up in the field
All-wheel drive is essential on deep, slippery ground, this is of course the standard PTO solution, but it is quite heavy and reduces the crossing height of the front axle with its differential housing. That’s why the 6 × 4 chassis and towing versions are available with Hi-Traction hydrostatic front drive. It consists of a pump driven from the power take-off shaft of the engine, two hydraulic motors built into the front hubs and an oil cooler. It can deliver more than 12,500 Nm of torque, can be used directly on the wheels from a standstill to 45 km / h, automatically turning on and off as needed, relieving the pilot. As a result, the payload may be higher and consumption may be reduced. The Hi-Tronix robotic transmission features a terrain mode that allows the engine to run at higher speeds and power, and a creep mode for very low-speed, sweeping maneuvers that can be activated in the quick menu and activated when the brake pedal is released: it moves the vehicle at idle. Of course, the T-WAY’s arsenal also includes a hill-holder function to make starting uphill easier.

Simplifies the driver’s work and avoids costly clutch burns Rocking mode for rocking a vehicle stuck in the mud: when activated, the clutch releases when the accelerator pedal is released, the clutch can roll back and accelerate and then move forward

Modern equipment
In the cab, the new multifunction steering wheel and the taller, enlarged screen appear first. The widest range of connectivity in the category is provided by the online Connectivity Box, with remote diagnostics, maintenance forecasting, and continuous monitoring of each vehicle in the fleet. Unexpected stops are minimized by Iveco On’s online services. All models feature the new ADAS (Active Driving Assistance System), which includes Electronic Stability Program and Lane Departure Warning.

A wide range of superstructures is available, some with hydrostatic front drive

At the wheel
The test drive was organized on the asphalt roads of the Drivingcamp near Zsámbék, as a matter of fact, I would have been happier with a quarry. The 3-axle tipper was only able to show a small percentage of its capabilities, but the journalists could do less damage… Climbing into the cab, I found myself in a friendly, high-quality environment. I’m pleased to see that I’m dealing with a traditional design: a shift lever with a toggle switch for range selection, and a good old clutch pedal. I like to drive like this, although if I had a full shift waiting for me in the quarry every day, I’d certainly be happier with the robot shifter. Of course, the T-WAY was racing briskly with an empty plateau, I got into the corners well due to some worries of the accompanying pilot, and I liked the noticeable stability. Turning narrowly between the buoys, I had the feeling that the steering wheel could be smaller, as I wouldn’t have to apply force with it anyway, maybe it would be more guaranteed. In any case, the overall impression was completely positive for “Don’t spare!” by truck, enveloping market success.
