The GNR detained a 25-year-old man on suspicion of drug trafficking and cultivation in the municipality of Mértola, in the district of Beja, and dismantled a greenhouse with 540 cannabis plants, was released this Monday.

In a statement, the GNR Territorial Command of Beja indicated that the suspect was detained on Sunday by soldiers from the Territorial Post of Mértola, for the crime of drug cultivation and trafficking.

According to the GNR, during a patrol action in this municipality in Alentejo, the military verified that the chimney of a residence “emanated an odor of cannabis”, which “triggered an approach” to the house.

“It was possible to ascertain that the residence” had been “transformed into a greenhouse”, which was “distributed over six rooms of the house, with a total of 540 cannabis plants about 1.5 meters high”, is mentioned in the note .

In addition to the 540 cannabis plants, GNR also seized several electrical materials used for ventilation and lighting in the greenhouse, which guaranteed the plants’ “growth conditions”.

The suspect was arrested, made an accused and will be present at the Judicial Court of Beja for the application of possible coercive measures.
