Today is the 50th anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman receiving the Julio Curie Medal. On this day in 1973, this medal was officially handed over to Bangabandhu. On the occasion of the golden jubilee of the father of the nation receiving this highly prestigious medal, a discussion meeting was held at Sonargaon University Green Road Campus Auditorium on Tuesday (May 23).
Bangladesh became independent in 1971 under the leadership of this undisputed leader. Just two years later, the World Peace Council officially awarded Bangabandhu the ‘Julio Curie’ international recognition. In the meeting of the Presidential Committee of the World Peace Council, in the presence of about 200 members of 140 countries and based on consensus, it was decided to award the Julio Curie medal to Bangabandhu, considering the context of Bangabandhu’s life philosophy and the general leadership of the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
According to that decision, the World Peace Council announced the name of Bangabandhu as the recipient of the medal on 10 October 1972. And the next year on May 23, the then Secretary General of the Parishad, Ramesh Chandra, presented the medal to Bangabandhu in a grand ceremony of the Asian Peace Conference. On that occasion, Ramesh Chandra said, ‘Bangabandhu is not only of Bengal, he is of the world and he is the friend of the world.’ It was the first international medal won by a state leader in independent Bangladesh.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Shamim Ara Hasan, former Treasurer and Professor of Business Administration Md. Al-Amin Mollah spoke as special guests on the 50th anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman receiving the ‘Julio Kuri’ Peace Medal. Prof. Dean of Faculty of Arts and Humanities also spoke at the event. MA Mabud, CSE Department Associate Professor and Department Head Bulbul Ahmed, ME Department Department Head Professor Md. Mostafa Hossain, Student Welfare Department Director Kazi Zulkarnain Sultan Alam. Registrar S, M, Nurul Huda presided over the program.
In the speech of the chief guest, Professor Dr. Md. Sajjad Hossain said, he (Bangabandhu) asked the students to research the politics of the nation, the country and the world. Unfortunately we could not retain Bangabandhu. We are the only nation in the world where education from primary to higher education can be done for very little money.
The chief guest thanked the private university authorities for allowing the students to take classes online during the corona virus.
He said, despite being poor ourselves, we have proved our greatness as a nation by sheltering 11 lakh Rohingyas.
This member of the University Grants Commission praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said that Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina has taken Bangladesh far in science and technology, due to which many science and technology universities are being established. Today we own our own satellites. We may have some gaps, but we are moving forward.
Dr. Sajjad advised the students to be inspired by learning from Bangabandhu’s biography to establish world peace.
