Disciplinary Board opens process to alleged cases of sexual harassment of coach

The Disciplinary Council (CD) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) will open disciplinary proceedings against alleged cases of sexual harassment by the current coach of the Famalicão women’s team, an official source of the body confirmed to Lusa this Thursday.

Questioned by Lusa, the same source reported on the initiation of the disciplinary procedure, following the news that made the headline in the Público newspaper today, adding that the FPF has a channel for anonymous reports of this type of cases or other illicit acts, such as manipulation of results or support for illegal immigration. Several footballers who played at Rio Ave in 2020/21 denounced, in the news published Thursday, harassment actions by the then coach of the Vila do Conde club, currently in charge of Famalicão, of the Women’s League, after having been in the season spent in Ovarense.

Also according to the newspaper, Miguel Afonso, 40, will have exchanged intimate messages with players from the Foz do Ave emblem, aged between 18 and 20.

Questioned by Público, the technician declined to comment on the allegations. The Lusa agency tried to contact Miguel Afonso, without success.

Since last July 1st, when the last update came into force, the FPF Disciplinary Regulations provide for punishing cases of sexual harassment, in articles 126-B and 150-A, by managers and players, respectively.

In cases of “harassing a sports agent adopting unwanted behavior of a sexual nature, whether verbal, non-verbal or physical, is punished with suspension from three months to one year”, without any fine.

official source of FPF said he did not know whether these cases had been reported in the Integrity channel, since these processes are always confidential.
