Digital purchases in Germany are down by 15 percent

Inflation and the general uncertain situation are causing consumer confidence to tip over worldwide. This is indicated by figures from the Salesforce Shopping Index. For the first time in nine years, sales in digital commerce are falling compared to the same period last year.

Salesforce describes the current situation in online retailing as a “historic turning point”, which the CRM specialist has been depicting in its Shopping Index for the past nine years. After e-commerce sales in Germany had already plummeted in February, the index is now noticing a global decline in digital purchases for the first time. Compared to the same period of the previous year, these fell by 3 percent. In Germany they even fell by 15 percent.

Situation in Europe worse than average

The Salesforce figures are not necessarily proportional to the total turnover in e-commerce, but the CRM specialist points to a decline in data traffic (-2 percent) and in order volume (-12 percent). In Europe, these declines are even more pronounced at -17 percent.

According to Salesforce figures, the order volume in Germany has fallen by 17 percent and inventories have fallen by ten percent – supply chain problems are clearly having an effect.

Bernd Wagner, Senior Vice President Cloud Sales at Salesforce, expects that rising fuel prices, increasing scarcity of goods and rising prices will affect consumers’ desire to shop in the longer term: “Inflation has finally curbed the shopping spree, consumers are buying fewer items for fewer retailers,” says the manager. “This points to a major shift in consumer behavior. To counteract this, retailers are once again challenged to avoid disconnects and friction between physical and digital channels and to meet their customers where they are.”
