Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine: Russia is militarizing Belarus

Ukraine is concerned about the strengthening of military ties between Belarus and Russia, said the first deputy head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Emine Dzhaparova, speaking at an informal meeting of the UN Security Council on the “Arria formula” in an online format. It is reported by TASS.

“We are particularly concerned about the Kremlin’s plans to place Russian air and missile bases in Belarus and to dramatically intensify bilateral military-technical cooperation,” Dzhaparova said. In her opinion, “such a militarization of Belarus is a direct threat not only to Ukraine, but to the whole of Eastern and Central Europe.”

“Let me remind you of the recent military exercises Zapad-2021 in this regard. Transparency in the military sphere and strategic stability are questionable here, ”the diplomat said.

According to her, Russia is taking advantage of the difficult situation in Belarus to achieve its foreign policy goals. “We hope that the severity of these threats will prompt Western countries to take decisive new action against Russia to prevent the absorption of Belarus by Russia,” Dzhaparova said.

Earlier, the speaker of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleg Nikolenko said that the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko resorts to Russian propaganda rhetoric against Ukraine.

“Once again we have witnessed the groundless insinuations against Ukraine on the part of Alexander Lukashenko,” Nikolenko noted, stressing that Lukashenka “rants about ghostly American bases and militant camps in Ukraine, while simultaneously transforming neighboring Belarus into a solid Russian military base”.

Nikolenko added that “it is from the Russian Federation that the main threat to Ukraine, Belarus and the Belarusian people, friendly to Ukrainians, is coming today”. He called on Minsk “not to turn into an appendage of Russia.”
