Members of the US Senate on Saturday voted in favor of summoning witnesses in the trial against former President Donald Trump.
It shows a live broadcast from the Senate.
With 55 to 45 votes, Democratic prosecutors have been allowed to ask Republican Congressman Jaime Herrera Beutler to testify in the case.
She was summoned to explain herself about a phone conversation that took place while Trump supporters stormed Congress on January 6th.
Beutler is said to have said she heard from the Republican minority leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, that he had spoken on the phone with Trump while the troublemakers were walking around the Congress building.
During the conversation, Trump had reportedly refused to ask his supporters to withdraw.
“Kevin, I think those people are more upset about the election than you are,” Trump is said to have told McCarthy, according to Beutler.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the presidential election was scammed last November and that the election was “stolen” from him.
He reiterated the claim in a speech to his supporters on January 6, just before they went to Congress and stormed the building.
Democrats want Beutler to tell more about the conversation between McCarthy and Trump, says Democrat Jamie Raskin. It must be done under oath in the Senate.
Raskin leads the team of Democrats who serve as prosecutors in the state court case.
“We would like to take this opportunity to convene Congressman Herrera regarding her communication with House of Representatives Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy,” said Raskin.
Democrats also want the notes she wrote about what the president said to McCarthy in the midst of the uprising, he adds.
Much of the state court case has been about how much Trump knew about the actions of the troublemakers on Jan. 6, as they marched through the congressional building in an attempt to prevent senators from formally approving Joe Biden’s election victory.
Jaime Herrera Beutler is one of the 10 Republican members of the House of Representatives who last month voted to initiate a federal lawsuit against Trump for inciting rebellion.
Before the Supreme Court case on Saturday entered its fifth day, it was expected that it could be over already on Saturday night. But the summoning of witnesses will probably mean that it will take longer.
It is unclear whether there will be more than one witness.
