Edmonton – Czech hockey defender David Jiricek will no longer intervene in the World Twenties Championship in Canada. He injured his left knee ligaments in Sunday’s opening match with the home team. The 18-year-old player from the extra-league Pilsen tried to stop Will Cuylle in the middle zone in the 28th minute, but after a knee crash, the match for him and finally the entire championship ended.

“David Jiříček has a ligament injury in the left knee and will unfortunately not interfere in the Junior World Championships in Canada. Yesterday’s preliminary diagnosis by the national team doctor Jaroslav Budín was confirmed by today’s magnetic resonance imaging,” said Czech spokesman Ondřej Kalát.

“Tomorrow he will fly back to the Czech Republic. He has received the complete results of magnetic resonance imaging and will pass it on to his club doctor, who will then decide on the next step,” Kalát added.

Jiříček started at the second junior world championship and has already won four matches in the jersey of the Czech national team. The NHL draft awaits him in July and is forecast to attack the top ten talent selections for the world’s best league.

“We all know that David is a great hope for Czech hockey. Of course the team has made a difference, on the other hand the team is playing like Jirka Ticháček, David Moravec and Michal Hrádek, the boys who play the extra league must take it. Unfortunately these things belong to hockey, “commented coach Karel Mlejnek after Jiříček ‘s loss after the match with Canada.
