On October 3, a solemn event dedicated to the International Day of the Elderly and the 20th anniversary of the Saskarsme Day Center took place at the Palace of Culture. Representatives of associations of pensioners and public organizations, a management of a municipal duma, partners in cooperation and friends of the Day center, and also elderly people of Daugavpils have taken part in it, self-management portal informs.

Those present welcomed the Chairman of the City Duma Andrey ElksninshFirst Vice Mayor Alexey VasilievChairman of the Social Affairs Committee Natalia Kozhanova and vice chairman Victoria Sporane-Khudoyanaas well as representatives of the Social Service, partners and friends of the day center.

After the congratulatory speeches, a festive concert followed, in which Saskarsme creative teams and their friends took part. Volunteers of the Day Center were honored – leaders of classes, circles, senior interest groups.

The beginning of the day center can be traced back to 2002, when the Daugavpils city day center for pensioners and the disabled was opened in the former kindergarten building at 4 Liepajas Street. In 2004, it was transformed into an independent self-government institution – the Day Center for Social Care and Social Rehabilitation, and in 2017 – into the Day Center Saskarsme.

Over the years, the center has become a place of gathering and organization of leisure for several hundred residents of Daugavpils. Saskarsme provides opportunities for the development of social skills, education, leisure activities, arts and amateur performances for people of retirement age, families with children, people with disabilities and people after serious, long-term illnesses. Its visitors can express themselves creatively in one of the many circles of applied art, dance, sing, play sports and other active activities.
