As usual, the decision was made mainly at the shooting range. The biathletes who took part in Sunday’s race with a mass start in Oberhof knew this from the very beginning. Thirteen biathletes managed to shoot the first shot from the entire starting field, and only five of them managed to shoot the second one. Fortunately for Czech fans, among the five, the only Czech participant in this race was Markéta Davidová. Thanks to that, she was able to enjoy contact with the Italian Wierer, the Swedish Hanna Öbergová and the Norwegian duo Knotten-Tandrevold. “The first half of the race was absolutely great from Markéta. Certain shooting, yet in a decent rhythm and very fast running, “was the coach of the Czech women’s team Egil Gjelland after the race.
Only the Italian Wiererová managed to shoot the third shot in the race cleanly, so after this standing shot she had a twenty-five-second lead over the second Hanna Öbergová. On the contrary, she had to go to one penalty round before leaving the stadium. At that time, the Czech representative Davidová also had to complete this. Thanks to the fact that she was then in the company of the well-running Austrian Lisa Hauserová, both of these competitors caught up quite quickly with the escaping Swede.
From the Czech point of view, it all looked very promising at the time, in the end everything had to be deciphered by the final stop on the carpet, ie the last standing shot. And she dug the running order perfectly. Wierer had to go to two penalty rounds and thus lost the opportunity to fight for precious metal. Unfortunately, the same thing happened to David. “Both of them flew off the target in the morning. I am pleased with Markéta’s stable performance, but she knows very well that she still needs to improve her shooting speed, “coach Egil Gjelland reminded after the race.
The French Simonová, together with the German Preussová, managed the final standings best, and it was both of these competitors that quite surprisingly got to the front of the race. In the end, the Frenchman did the best two-kilometer circuit, as she had far more strength left. The Northerners fought for bronze, the most successful of which was the Swede Hanna Öbergová. It is definitely not without interest that the difference between the sixth and thirteenth place in the finish was six seconds.
“I could have finished much better, after all, the two from the last shooting shouldn’t have been there. Before that, however, circumstances forced me to set the pace on the track. The other girls from the top didn’t want to go much, and during my slower shooting I didn’t want the whole package to come down. I felt pretty tired before the massacre, in the end it wasn’t so crazy, even though it was really difficult to climb Rennsteig five times. But I don’t want to be immodest, every place in the top ten counts, “David said in an interview after the race.
