Swimmer David Popovici (17 years old), European champion and world record holder in the 100-meter freestyle, competed for a new title at the European Swimming Championships in Rome on Monday, this time in the 200-meter freestyle.

Coach Adrian Rădulescu’s student managed to win the first semi-final on Sunday and qualify without emotions in the final of the 200 meters freestyle event, with the best time: 1:44.91.

In Monday’s final, Popovici confirmed his status as the big favourite, finishing first with another very good performance of 1:42.97, a new junior world record.

The 17-year-old Romanian led the race from one end to the other and was followed by the Swiss Antonio Djakovic (1:45.60), at a colossal distance of about two and a half seconds. Popovici obtained the third best time of the event in history.

David Popovici also won a gold medal in Rome, in the 100 m freestyle, in which he also set the world record for seniors, with 46.86. The Romanian will also compete at the European Championships in the 400 meters freestyle.
