David Goyer is a director and screenwriter known, among others thanks to the films “The Dark Knight”, “Batman vs. Superman” and “Dark City”. He is currently working on the series adaptation of the cult series “Foundation” by Isaac Asimov, created for the needs of Apple TV +. He recently gave a short interview to Lovin Malta, in which he shed a bit more light on the production.
The series commissioned by Apple is not the first attempt to film “The Foundation”. New Line Cinema was working on a film adaptation back in 1998. Columbia Pictures took up the subject in 2009, and in 2014 HBO bought the film rights from them, which first wanted to remake ” Foundation “for the series. However, none of these companies managed to complete the project. Goyer admitted in an interview that he was lucky to be in a much better position than his predecessors. Over the last few years, both the media market itself has changed, where streaming services play the most important role, and the expectations of the audience. In his opinion, “Game of Thrones” paved the way for long, high-budget serial adaptations of the novel. Thanks to this, he can now freely write the entire plot into eighty episodes, and not try to condense it into two hours. He also pointed out that in today’s difficult times there is especially high demand for science-fiction series, as they are a way for many people to escape from everyday life.
Goyer also talked about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the work on the Foundation. He admitted that it forced some changes in their original plans. Initially, Malta was to be just one of many places where the series was supposed to be created, but due to the pandemic they were forced to limit their travels, so they decided to shoot more scenes there, searching for locations that could represent different planets from the world of the Foundation.
As announced last year, the first season of the series “The Foundation” is slated to appear in the Apple TV + catalog in the fall. It will run with ten episodes and will star Jared Harris, Leah Harvey and Terrence Mann, among others.
