Danish public broadcaster advises against TikTok staff

Employees of the Danish public broadcaster are advised not to have TikTok on their phones. Those who need it for their work should preferably do so on a separate device.

Denmark’s radio follows the line of the Center for Cyber Security (CFCS). That is the national adviser on digital security matters. That provided earlier this week advice to public authorities not to use TikTok on official devices of government authorities.

The advice is for discouragement. It’s not a ban.

The public broadcaster is financed from government funds and has considered its position in this file. The provisional conclusion is that the app can no longer be used and installed on work phones. Journalists who have to use it for use must have access to an ‘isolated’ TikTok telephone.

The Danes are particularly concerned about the very broad rights and access that the app requires on the device. This allows it to collect all kinds of information and link it to the identity of the user. It is not clear what happens behind the scenes with this data.

Denmark is by no means the only country where authorities and companies are now moving away from TikTok. A few weeks ago, the European Commission banned the Chinese app from employees’ phones. And similar measures have been taken in Canada, the US and Flanders.

Media companies like to use the social video app because it is about the only channel where they can still reach younger target groups directly.
