Daniel Buren’s work in Dijon

A free work visible to all, but only from the street. Daniel Buren made a temporary installation (until November 2022) inside the park ofHotel de la Thoison, headquarters of the Banque de France, in Dijon. Bottom-up point of view, which translated means “ascending point of view”, is a trompe l’oeil strip that runs on a 35 meter ‘walkway’, which tilts upwards giving theoptical illusion to extend to the roof of the building and which, despite being housed in a space not accessible to the public, is clearly visible from rue des Godrans.

Buren is one of the best known French artists and his sophisticated poetry has always traveled the world. Born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1938, since the 1960s, he has created his works through dialogue with large public spaces, applying his colored stripes alternated with other white ones. They are abstract works that reveal places, celebrate the confrontation and highlight the understanding between art and architecture.

The installation calls the image of the carpet that is unrolled, while the digitally printed diamond pattern on the base is inspired by the typical Burgundy glazed tiles. Also with this work with a trompe-l’oeil effect, Buren offers a new look at an artistic and historical heritage of the city of Dijon, creating an extension effect with the roof of the Hotel de la Thoison.
