DANICA GRUJIČIĆ PRESENTED SCARY FACTS: Dark prognosis for next year – cancer will become the most common chronic disease

Commenting on the situation among cancer patients due to the corona virus epidemic, Dr. Grujicic pointed out that about 180 thousand people were examined in 2019, and that in 2020 there was a drop of 125 thousand patients who did not come for control and who did not reviewed.

– We have registered 37.5 thousand new patients. These are new patients, which means that the number is around 40 thousand, which is really worrying. What is most worrying is that patients come to us in the terminal phase, there have never been so many patients in that final phase of the disease, and they have just appeared to start treatment – said Dr. Grujicic.

According to him, the examinations at the Institute have tripled.

– We must work on expanding the network of oncology services. Everyone needs to know more about oncology and plan a much larger space, so that people have both day hospitals and palliation. We have a lot of patients who need a little infusion and transfusion and thus prolong their life – said Dr. Grujicic.

According to him, oncological diseases will become the most common chronic disease next year.

– There will be more and more of these patients. We will all be patients, just to live long enough, and find out in time. We have to adjust the capacities of secondary health centers for the fight against cancer – said Dr. Grujicic.

He points out that the institutions are overloaded, and adds that we must develop those services that enable people to spend as long as possible in their house.

– A plan for optimization of networks in Serbia has been made, the public debate should be extended a little more and we should see which directions of development should go. The key to success, in my opinion, is a good organization of primary health care – said Dr. Grujicic.
