Prague/Hong Kong – A Czech senior sentenced in Hong Kong to 27 years in prison for drug smuggling was transferred to the Czech Republic at the end of October. Czech Radio reported it today – Radio journal. According to the radio, this is the first citizen of the Czech Republic whom Hong Kong extradited on the basis of the treaty on the mutual extradition of convicts. Seventy-four-year-old Vladimír Švec will spend the rest of his sentence in a Czech prison, he should be released at the age of 93.

Švec was convicted in Hong Kong in January 2018, when he was almost 70 years old. He previously spent more than a year in custody. In the Czech Republic, according to the spokesperson of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic, Markéta Prunerová, he will have to serve the entire remainder of his sentence. “The convict is placed in a prison that corresponds to the type of prison specified in the judgment on serving a prison sentence in the Czech Republic,” Prunerová told radio.

The shoemaker was detained at the Hong Kong airport with approximately three kilograms of cocaine, but he always denied the guilt. He claimed he did not know about the drugs in the trunk. According to Radiožurnál, the man first traveled through Africa to Brazil to receive the alleged inheritance, which he learned about in an email. The suitcase in which the police found drugs in Hong Kong was said to have been given to him as a gift in Brazil. After arriving in Hong Kong, he was slightly disoriented, searching for his suitcase and unable to recognize it, which attracted the attention of the police, the radio reported. “It’s a conspiracy,” said Švec, according to Radiožurnál.

The association Šalamoun advocated the extradition of Švec to serve his sentence in the Czech Republic. According to representatives of the association, Švec could only have been a naive and abused victim, not a real perpetrator. The association drew attention to the fact that the senior is hard of hearing and does not know any foreign language.

Another Czech senior, Luděk Havránek, received the same sentence as Švec in 2017 in Hong Kong for drug smuggling. In 2016, the police detained him at the airport with six kilograms of cocaine in his suitcase. Havránek arrived in the same way as Švec from South America. In 2020, Havránek died in a Hong Kong prison at the age of 68. According to the deceased’s son, Havránek suffered from cancer, Radiožurnál reported at the time.
