Ostrava – Czech handball players returned after two days to prepare for the European Championships, which they suspended on Wednesday due to two positive tests for coronavirus at the beginning of the week. After today’s withdrawals, there was no new case of infection in the team, two members of the team remain positive, of which one player. Coach Rastislav Trtík’s charges are to enter the championship on January 13 in Bratislava with a match against Spain.

The Czech team started the final preparations for the championship in Ostrava at the beginning of the week and the entrance tests for the coronavirus revealed two positive cases. One of the infected is an unnamed player and the other is a member of the implementation team. Coach Trtík called 21 handball players to the final camp.

In both positively tested, subsequent analysis confirmed the omicron virus variant, but no further spread of the infection appeared. All other team members had negative both Wednesday and today’s subscriptions.

“We wanted to learn from last year’s mistakes, so we took tougher measures. We are really glad that today’s subscriptions have confirmed the correctness of the set regime. The boys can train again and we believe that the preparation will be without complications,” said the president of the handball association. Ondřej Zdráhala.

A year ago, the Czech national team abandoned its participation in the World Cup in Egypt at the last minute due to the high number of coronavirus cases. The federal executive subsequently recalled the coaching duo Jan Filip and Daniel Kubeš under controversial circumstances, which the then president Jaroslav Chvalný called too harsh a punishment.

She was reluctant to experience last year’s situation as a player. “We know that measures are a complication in the preparation for the coach and the team. But it was important to take precautionary measures, which turned out to be the right way. Otherwise, the virus could spread further Europe, “remarked Zdráhala.

The national team management still has 14 substitutes in reserve, who undergo regular testing to be ready to jump into the tournament in the event of further complications. The team should have eight to nine training sessions before the championship. He will move to the tournament venue on Tuesday. “We firmly believe that the team will be able to prepare as best as possible despite the complications and will deliver a quality performance at the European Championships,” added Zdráhala.

The Czech team will play the whole basic group in Bratislava. In addition to Spain, they will face Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sweden in the opening phase of the tournament. The first two teams from each group will advance to the next part of the championship.
