In Cyprus, researchers discovered a new variant of coronavirus, which is a combination of delta and omicron variants, and was therefore named deltacron. The Austrian web portal OE24 informed about it on Sunday.
A new variant was discovered by a team of scientists from the University of Cyprus led by the professor of life sciences Leondios Kostrikis, who also named it. So far, 25 cases of infection with this variant have been detected in Cyprus, which according to Kostrikis contains protein structures of the delta and omicron variants. As he said for Sigma TV, he thinks that the currently dominant omicron will prevail against him.
German virologist and epidemiologist Klaus Stöhr assumes that deltacrone is unlikely to be really dangerous, the daily Bild wrote. “In biology, there is not one and one unconditionally two. Just because one virus has the external properties of two others or because mutations of two variants combine does not mean that they have the same clinical consequences, “he explained.
Stöhr also added that hundreds of variants with a variety of mutations are constantly emerging. “Very rarely, any of them will become dominant or even less globally and will suppress other variants for a while, until another variant does the same,” he said.
