Cycling on the train tracks – Railbiking also came to Greece

This is definitely something we have not seen in our country, but we may have succeeded in some foreign film or documentary. Railbiking is a fun activity that combines the benefits of cycling with the use of abandoned railways and has a fan base around the world.

In fact, from this has emerged the railway cycling tourism, which combines exercise and leisure. Thus, it is included in alternative tourism. It is also worth noting that it is an activity friendly for the whole family, all ages, but also for people with disabilities.

The people of Railbiking in Greece are the first to bring this special activity to Greece. Having specially designed bicycle stalls placed on the old metro line of OSE for Peloponnese, they offer a unique journey through unique beauty landscapes.

By cycling on the old lines, we can gain access to routes and important attractions, which are not reached by road and are difficult for people to know.

The headquarters of Railbiking Greece is located in Megara and has planned a route of 16 kilometers (including the return to Megara) on the train bike. The participants even pass through a special point, Kakia Skala, which is a rocky and steep location in the western part of the Geraneia Mountains between the plain of Megara and the area of Kineta.

At the end of the 19th century, the metric line that united Athens and Attica, with Patras and then with the whole Peloponnese, was built in this area with a lot of effort and sweat. The line was in operation until the late 1990s, when the new state-of-the-art line north of today was built. As a result, the network was abandoned and in many places it was looted.

In today’s Kakia Skala and on the train bike one can see the half-ruined stations and the “outposts” of the once SPAP (Railways Piraeus – Athens – Peloponnese), the abandoned lime factory -with the impressive lime kiln- in S the fish farms, but also the many stone machine guns of the B.P. built by the German occupying forces to protect the railway, but also to control the narrow strategic passage between the Peloponnese and Attica. At the same time, the seascape is enchanting as the route is largely close to the water. Below, the founder of Railbiking Greece Artemios Filatov brings to this special experience.
