Suara.com – The discourse of increasing the Commuter Line KRL tariff was highlighted by Member of Commission V of the DPR RI, Toriq Hidayat, because it was considered not in line with the spirit of the policy to promote the use of public transportation by the public.
“The increase in tariffs has the potential to weaken people’s enthusiasm for using mass public transportation modes. This is not in accordance with the government’s campaign related to increasing awareness of the use of urban mass public transportation and non-motorized transportation (NMT) on International Health Day which is commemorated every April 7,” said Toriq Hidayat, Friday. (14/1/2021).
Toriq believes that now is not the right time to increase the basic fare for the Commuter Line KRL due to various considerations, such as the increase in the prices of some basic necessities, such as cooking oil.
In addition, he said, the purchasing power of people in various regions is currently considered low due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic is not over yet, there is even a potential for a new variant of COVID-19, which poses the threat of a third wave. The government should increase subsidies for this public transportation mode, rather than talk about increasing fares,” said Toriq.
Throughout 2021, according to him, there will be a decline in KAI Commuter Line users, namely for the Jabodetabek operational area, a decrease of 19.6 percent compared to the number of Jabodetabek KRL users throughout 2020.
“Due to the pandemic, nearly 20 percent of the number of Jabodetabek KAI Commuter Line users will decline in 2021. However, the potential for future increases is quite large, considering that some people claim that they have no other choice as transportation with faster and more convenient access,” said Toriq.
He added that the public really appreciates KAI with its various performance achievements and innovation efforts as well as modernization of Commuter Line KRL services during the pandemic, so don’t let this appreciation change because of the discourse on increasing tariffs.
As reported, the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) through the Directorate General of Railways has not yet decided to increase the tariff for electric trains (KRL).
