According to the data of the Kandilli Observatory, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 occurred in Istanbul on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 15:07. Science Academy Member and ITU Geological Engineer lecturer Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made a statement on social media after the earthquake.
Görer made the following statements:
“Friends, today there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 in the Kartal region. This earthquake was not on the sea, but on land. After the 1999 earthquakes, we knew that there was a weakness zone/fault between the Gebze-Maltepe line, parallel to the Adalar branch of the NAF. There were earthquakes in the order of 4 in 2000 and 2001. In fact, I warned the local governments in those years by writing a letter. We even examined the part of this fault between Gebze and Tuzla. I was the President of TÜBİTAK MAM at that time. The existence of this fault requires more care, because in case of a possible Marmara earthquake, these areas will act as a relatively weaker zone. With love..”
