Crimea responded to Kiev’s plans to block water supply with a dam

In Crimea, they commented on Kiev’s intention to complete the dam on the North-Crimean Canal in order to make it impossible to supply water to the peninsula. This was previously stated by the permanent representative of the President of Ukraine in Crimea Anton Korinevich.

The vice-speaker of the Crimean parliament, Vladimir Bobkov, called the speculation about the construction of a dam against the background of a budget deficit in Ukraine stupid. He recalled that large-scale work is underway in Crimea to strengthen the water security of the peninsula, so any prospect of obtaining water from the Ukrainian territory becomes less and less relevant and interesting for the Crimeans.

“It’s time to stop all these stupid statements about water, the supply of which Ukraine has long ago cut off and now still wants to waste money in order to guarantee this for itself,” he quotes RIA Novosti Bobkov. He stressed that, despite the various challenges, the residents of Crimea are used to relying solely on their own strength.

The head of the Crimean State Committee for Interethnic Relations, Albert Kangiev, in an interview with the agency, called the intention of the Ukrainian side ridiculous. According to him, water has not been supplied from Ukraine through the canal for more than six years, but, nevertheless, the peninsula is coping with all the challenges and tasks. “All this is another trick of the Kiev authorities to enrich themselves at the expense of budgetary funds,” said Kangiev.

He stressed that great efforts have been made by the federal and republican authorities to provide water to the residents of Crimea. And Ukraine, having blocked the channel, “continues to expose itself to the entire world community as a state carrying out genocide against the multinational Crimea.”

Ukraine cut off the supply of fresh water to Crimea through the North Crimean Canal in the spring of 2014. These supplies covered up to 90% of the republic’s water needs. Over the past years, a project has been implemented in Crimea on the use of groundwater for organizing water supply to the population of the peninsula.
