COWI leads the way with result-creating collaborations

Jamshid Jahid and Hanna Siwertz work together with Ostlänken, which is the first step towards new main lines in Sweden. The project is unique, but the type of collaboration that takes place between Hanna and Jamshid is not unusual at COWI. The company puts a lot of effort into creating a prosperous workplace – which is not least seen in their well-functioning collaborations.

It is no secret that a value-creating culture needs to be built and nurtured. Really good collaborations develop in a culture and a structure that promotes community. A prime example is Hanna Siwertz and Jamshid Jahid, who together with a team of almost 200 people lead COWI’s work with Ostlänken.

Ostlänken is a new railway of 160 km between Järna and Linköping. COWI has been working on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration since 2015 with the stage Nyköping, between Sillekrog and Stavsjö. It is the third and longest of the four stages that Ostlänken is divided into with 6,5 km of new main track and 10 km of conventional track. The investment is the first part in the construction of new trunk lines in Sweden. The project will provide improved train traffic and – thanks to its size and challenges – attract new skills to COWI.

– In this project, I am the assignment leader and Jamshid is the assistant. Together with a strong team, we run the project consisting of 30 different technology areas at COWI. In the Ostlänken project, Jamshid and I work closely with each other and complement each other very well, says Hanna Siwertz, project manager at COWI.

Hanna’s and Jamshid’s collaboration has not only been rewarding for themselves, but also for the project as a whole. They have found each other in a symbiosis that has proven to be very successful. Jamshid, project manager at COWI, believes that this is due to several factors:

– We work together and towards common goals. For example, it is our responsibility to ensure that our colleagues have the conditions to do their job as well as possible, which has worked incredibly well in the project. This is partly due to the trust that Hanna and I have in each other, but also to the lack of prestige that exists between us. Hanna helps me to look up and prioritize correctly and I am happy and grateful for that.

Close collaborations create added value throughout the company

COWI employs many competent and talented engineers and consultants, which creates a solid foundation to stand on when it comes to valuable collaborations.

– At COWI, we are close to both our colleagues and to decisions. It is a culture where community is promoted and where there is no territorial thinking, which paves the way for unpretentious collaborations. I get energy from working with Jamshid. He is driven, efficient and competent. We do this together and it feels very safe. We talk several times a day, have a common action plan and stand up for each other. One plus one will be more than two within COWI, says Hanna.

COWI works purposefully to promote community between colleagues. To succeed in the task as a community builder, you value the individual and the company invests a lot in creating security and added value.

– When the barriers and distances are removed, you really get to the core and allow yourself to need each other. It will be a strong driving force and build a long-term perspective. Of course, everyone manages on their own and is very competent, but we get better together, says Jamshid.
