COVID – A quarter of the population is unvaccinated, a new vaccination campaign is being launched

As a quarter of Brussels residents still did not take the vaccine against COVID, the Brussels region launched another vaccination campaign, while the number of people hospitalized due to the coronavirus infection in Belgium dropped below nine hundred, reported the Belgian daily newspaper La Libre Belgique.

So far, 62 percent of Brussels residents have received at least the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. 26 percent of people over the age of 18 in Brussels have not been vaccinated. However, 94 percent of those over 85 received at least the first dose. In July and August, just under five hundred people requested the first dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus in the Belgian capital.

The Brussels region launched a vaccination campaign at the end of August, in which residents who have already been protected are encouraged to take the booster and the second booster doses. In the vaccination campaign, they are already vaccinating with vaccines adapted to the omicron version of the coronavirus.

In Brussels, 15 percent of people over the age of 80 and 5.4 percent of people over the age of 65 have received the second booster vaccination so far. At national level, 47.1 percent of people over the age of 85 and 5.1 percent of the entire Belgian population received the second booster vaccination.

The daily also reported that the competent Belgian public health authority hopes that during the vaccination campaign there will be people who will apply for the first dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus. However, in their opinion, it will be difficult to convince those who have abstained until now to get vaccinated. The authority asked the unvaccinated to if symptoms of infection appear, perform a coronavirus test, but at least follow the recommendations for ventilation, community stay, and isolation.

According to Tuesday’s data from the Belgian public health authority, between August 23 and 29, an average of 64 people were hospitalized due to coronavirus infection in Belgium per day, which represents a 19 percent decrease compared to the previous week’s data. Currently, 870 people are being cared for in hospitals, this figure still exceeded a thousand in the second half of last week. 77 infected patients require intensive care. On average, 7 people die every day due to the coronavirus, this number is 23 percent lower than the previous week’s data.

In Belgium, an average of 7,700 coronavirus tests are carried out every day with a positivity rate of 22.2 percent. The reproduction rate of the virus is 0.88, which means that the rate of spread of the epidemic is slowing down in the country. The number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants decreased by about 25 percent to 197 in 14 days. Since the start of the epidemic, 4,482,315 people have been infected with the new type of coronavirus and 32,516 people have died from the complications in Belgium.
