The general director of Health, Graça Freitas, clarified this Wednesday that children who have contact with a positive case of covid-19 at school are not isolated.
Speaking to Lusa news agency, Graça Freitas said that only children who live in the same house as someone with covid-19 are considered to be high-risk contacts, which is why they are isolated, as they do not have a booster for the vaccine.
“As a rule, we will consider children only high-risk contact if they are cohabiting with a patient”, so this child is isolated, because “it is a home contact and the children do not have support”, explained the director general of the Health.
A child with a contact with a positive case at school does not stay in isolation, Graça Freitas told Lusa, adding that what is asked of parents is that contacts and interactions be reduced and that these children, depending on their age, wear a mask.
Children who stay at school take a test on the third day, he added.
Classes are expected to resume on Monday in Portugal after the Christmas vacation period has been extended from two to three weeks as a measure to combat the pandemic.
Covid-19 has caused in Portugal, since March 2020, 19,029 deaths and 1,499,976 cases of infection were recorded, according to data from today’s DGS.
