The temporary reinstatement of people control at the borders with Spain to face covid-19 started on January 31 and ended on Sunday, but was extended until March 1 with some adjustments.
“Following the dialogue with the mayors of the municipalities in the region and the permanent articulation between the governments of Portugal and Spain, the control of people at the land and river borders will continue until March 1, with the decision to add two Points Authorized Passengers (PPA), in Melgaço and Montalegre “, says a statement from the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI).
The Ministry under the tutelage of Eduardo Cabrita also adds that “slight adjustments were made to the opening hours of some PPAs, as a way to better serve the interests of both sides of the border”.
The MAI states that as of 00:00 on Monday, circulation between Portugal and Spain remains limited to the international transport of goods, cross-border and seasonal workers duly documented, and emergency and emergency vehicles and emergency services, being this passage is only possible at authorized points.
According to MAI, cross-border rail traffic also remains suspended, except for goods transport, as well as river transport between Portugal and Spain.
The MAI also indicates that these limitations do not prevent the entry into Portugal of national citizens and holders of residence permits in Portugal, as well as the exit of citizens residing in other countries.
The authorized crossing points that operate 24 hours a day throughout the week are seven, namely Valença, Vila Verde da Raia, Quintanilha, Vilar Formoso, Caia, Vila Verde de Ficalho and Castro Marim.
The Marvão PPA operates on working days from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm and the authorized ticket points in Monção, Melgaço and Montalegre operate on working days from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The MAI also indicates that there are still four other PPAs that operate on working days from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Miranda do Douro, Termas de Monfortinho, Mourão and Barrancos, while the Rio PPA de Onor is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00.
