These days, Poland is dealing with a major food crisis that has shaken society. Farmers fattened animals with feed that contained technical oils and lubricants. Behind the fraud is a married couple who have been successful in such a “business” for at least two years.
“Suspicious feed was unknowingly used by well-known companies from the meat industry, suppliers of compound feed are behind the fraud,” informs the Polish portal onet.pl.
Big players in the meat industry are among the defrauded customers. The inspection has so far revealed such meat in more than 60 establishments. These are pork and poultry.
How they fooled everyone
“Technical oils were brought to Poland in tankers from Ukraine, Russia and Malaysia,” describes onet.pl. However, oils for the food industry are checked at the borders. But the perpetrators prepared in advance.
“The company declared at the Polish border crossings that it was transporting so-called technical oils used for the production of fuel. Thus, technical oils were exempted from the control as non-food oils. Later, however, the company sold them to the recipients as food oils,” reveals the portal. The recipients of the goods were well-known companies that further processed them in the meat industry.
The investigators concluded that if the victims had known in advance what they would be offered, they would not have bought technical oils from them.
We have increased control
Is it possible that meat that contains technical oils and lubricants is also in our establishments due to the openness of the market? The Minister of Agriculture turned to the veterinary administration. Samuel Vlčan asked the veterinary administration to ensure increased control at the Polish borders.
Could a similar case be repeated in our country? “It is unacceptable and nothing like this could happen in Slovakia,” Minister of Agriculture Samuel Vlčan told the public. The portal informs about it tvnoviny.sk.
However, the biggest players on the market got their hands on the mentioned meat, which brought the meat to Polish stores in bulk. And probably also to Slovak customers. Especially to those who go on a shopping trip to our neighbors, or have come across it somewhere in a restaurant. It is not yet ruled out that such meat could have been exported outside of Poland.
